Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an Executive Order that will ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel-driven vehicles by the year 2035. The order would then require that any vehicle purchased from a dealer to be zero-emission. The Governor cited transportation as the number one sector contributing to over 50 percent of California’s greenhouse gas emissions and he estimates that these new rules will reduce those emissions by 35 percent.
The Executive Order also calls out for all drayage truck sales to be zero- emission by 2035 and 100 percent of all medium and heavy-duty vehicles in the state to be zero-emission by 2045 where operations are feasible. Although the Executive Order would require new cars and trucks sold at dealership’s to be zero-emission, it would not prevent Californians from owning existing gasoline-powered cars and trucks or selling them on the used car market.
The new order is the first of its kind in the United States but follows the path of other countries, including the UK, Germany, India, and Canada that have passed legislation to phase-out gas powered vehicles.
The California Strawberry Commission will continue to work with the Governor’s office, partner trade associations, and the California Air Resources Board to discuss the impacts this may have on transportation and off-road vehicles in agriculture.
