Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is the most prevalent form of diabetes mellitus and is on the rise. Lifestyle behaviors that can prevent the disease usually do not occur until after receiving a diagnosis of pre-diabetes. With a conversion rate to T2DM of 50% within the first seven years, early dietary interventions can be the most important step in avoiding the T2DM diagnosis.

Specifically, increasing intake of anthocyanin-rich foods may reduce the risk of T2DM, according to a recent review by Britt Burton Freeman et al. of the Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH) at Illinois Institute of Technology. Anthocyanins are flavonoids responsible for the red, purple, and blue pigments in vegetables and fruits such as strawberries.

Meta-analyses of the research indicate that doses of 7.5 mg/day of dietary anthocyanin or 7g of berries per day could reduce the risk of T2DM by 5%. Although the exact mechanism is unknown, anthocyanins may reduce inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance, risk factors for T2DM. Flavonoids like anthocyanins appear to influence glucose metabolism via multiple pathways, including increased β-cell function in the pancreas, increased AMP-K activation in the muscle and liver, and a decrease in α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and/or glucose transport activity in the small intestine.

Strawberries have the most dense concentration of anthocyanin flavonoids in the human diet and this review suggests that increasing intake of strawberries may be one lifestyle change that could contribute to the risk reduction of T2DM.
