Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative condition that causes joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. One in two adults will develop symptoms of knee OA during their lives, according to the Arthritis Foundation. Since there is no cure, treatment includes lifestyle modifications such as exercise, weight management, stretching, and anti-inflammatory medications.

In a randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study presented at the 2017 Experimental Biology conference, 17 obese adults were randomized into two groups; each consumed 50 grams of freeze-dried strawberry powder or a placebo for 12 weeks. When the subjects consumed strawberries, they reported significantly decreased pain levels compared to the control group.

Strawberries contain bioactive compounds that may help improve knee OA pain. While the mechanisms are unknown, the researchers hope to investigate these findings in a larger trial.
