California growers have supported breeding efforts at the University of California, Davis for over 50 years. The program has released varieties used by growers throughout California and throughout the world, with a renewed focus on producing disease-resistant varieties.

Soilborne diseases such as Fusarium Wilt, Verticillium Wilt, and Charcoal Rot have no effective postplant control, and thus continued cultivation in fields with these diseases will rely on disease-resistant varieties.
