CalSavers Large Employer Registration Deadline Extended Due to COVID-19

CalSavers, California’s new retirement savings program that is available to California workers whose employers do not offer a workplace retirement plan recently announced that it has extended the registration deadline for employers with 100 or more employees from June 30, 2020 to the new date of September 30, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Enacted in 2016, CalSavers requires private-sector employers to register with the program if the employer has:

  • Five or more employees; and
  • Does not maintain or contribute to a tax-qualified retirement plan like a 401k for their employees

The deadline extension does not apply to the other two deadlines:

  • Employers with more than 50 employees must register by June 30, 2021
  • Employers with five or more employees must register by June 30, 2022
