This week, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced changes that are relevant regarding the temporary special permit for COVID-19 transportation relief for perishable agricultural products.

Caltrans has been offering temporary special permits that increase the maximum overweight total up to 88,000lbs. for transportation of certain agricultural products. Originally, the permit only applied to overweight trucks hauling the following agricultural products: tomatoes, peaches, pears, grapes, onions, carrots, citrus, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, olives, pomegranates, rice, wheat, corn, safflower, and potatoes. The permit was originally valid for up to 60 days or until August 31, 2021.

The changes will now include all perishable agricultural products, however mixed cargo is not permitted. Additionally, the time frame for special permits has been extended to December 31, 2021, or 60 days from the date of permit issuance.

The temporary permit only applies to State Highways and does not apply to overweight trucks transporting agricultural goods on interstates and local roads. Trucks transporting agricultural products will have to get permits from local jurisdictions to travel on local roads.
